100 bases in 100 days
Carlos Procter (centre) and company on the final leg of their Marathon to RAF Coningsby
DID you know there are more than 100 RAF and Royal Flying Corp camps in Lincolnshire?
Staff at RAF Coningsby decided to turn their discovery of Lincolnshire’s history into a fundraiser as they set out on a ‘100 Stations 100 Days’ campaign.
Originally starting out as a team-building exercise, members of the Typhoon Training Facility decided to raise money for charity whilst visiting the bases.
Flight Sergeant Carlos Proctor said: “The idea came about after we wanted the guys to do some team building.
“A group of us got thinking and I mentioned that when I worked at Woodhall Spa we had a competition to name other local Airforce Camps.
“We only thought there would be a few, then found out there was actually over 100.
“It was a lot more than we thought because it also included Royal Flying Corp bases.
“We had a look on the map and someone suggested visiting them.”
Cyclists, motor bikers, joggers and even a kayaker collectively visited 100 stations and the final leg culminated with a marathon finishing at RAF Coningsby.
“It was a fantastic feeling when we finished,” Flt Sgt Proctor said. “It opened our eyes.
“I did 18 miles jogging one weekend - from Binbrook to Stenigot then on to Market Stainton.
“I ran through a lot of villages, and it made me realise that Lincolnshire really is a nice place to live.”
Flight Lieutenant Bob Fraser attempted to kayak from Lincoln to the River Humber then down to the River Witham to Boston but ran into some difficulty.
“He made it from Lincoln to Grimsby, but he was paddling at five knots into a 30 knot wind,” Flt Sgt Proctor continued.
“So we picked him up from Grimsby and took him to the River Witham to finish the final leg.”
Flt Sgt Proctor also explained that their charities of choice were influenced after a colleague fell ill.
“A lady who works with us is suffering from Breast Cancer so we decided to raise funds for Pilgrim Hospital Boston Breast Care Unit via the NHS Trust and Lincoln County Hospital Special Care Baby Unit.”
