Sort out our drainage
EDITOR – Re housing development – Mareham Road.
The problem of traffic, roads, environment pollution, vehicle numbers, and several other things that come with this sort of development have been commented on, as has the subject of my observations.
The recent flooding in many – maybe most cases – has been the inability for the volume of surface water to be dealt with.
This leads on to the volume of water to be got rid of from this development.
I would appreciate that the natural outlet would be via the Thunker Drain.
I use the word drain loosely, as it is little more the a ditch or beck in many places.
This waterway is totally inadequate to cope with the run-off as it exists at this time.
Surely the overloading will be more acute given the extra volume it will be asked to carry?
Going back to 1960, my premises, and those of my neighbour, were flooded up to the top of the fireplace.
The floodwater did not come from the Waring, but down the Thunker Drain and in the back door.
The drainage of Horncastle is a disgrace.
Have a walk and look at the state of the main waterway in the area near the swimming pool.
The reeds and sediment create a barrier which restricts the flow of water.
Since the amalgamation of water boards and the environment authority, we have gone backwards.
The canal used to be cleaned out regularly, the reeds cut back.
We had a large wind-up door instead of a “rat hole” – all retrograde steps which our residents and businesses are having to pay for.
We used to have better waterways. surely we can have decent drainage and ducks as well.
