Report on future of town’s car parking was not all that clear

EDITOR – Your report of the deliberations of our town councillors on the subject of parking in Horncastle’s metered East Lindsey District Council car parks left me rather confused.

Either the town councillors (three of whom are also East Lindsey district councillors) are not aware of the current rules on parking in these car parks or your report was inaccurate.

You said that town councillors had unanimously asked East Lindsey to “consider” no-fee parking after 6pm on Sundays and bank holidays. That’s odd because it’s already free after 6pm Monday to Saturday and free all day on Sundays.

You also report that Coun Ann Wayne called for free parking to be “retained” on Saturdays and bank holidays. I don’t know where that came from because parking in the car parks on Saturdays and bank holidays is chargeable from 8am to 6pm and has been for years.

Could someone explain what our town councillors are reportedly on about?

EDITOR’S NOTE: ELDC’s Scrutiny Review of Car Parking aims to bring car parking charges in line with each other across the district.

In Skegness you pay for parking seven days a week until around 10pm at night.

There is a fear this will be standardised across East Lindsey. In their response to ELDC therefore the town council called for Horncastle’s free parking after 6pm, on Sundays and bank holidays to be maintained.

Our apologies if this was not clear in the report and thank you Mr Stephens for your letter, which has allowed us to clarify the issue.
