28/05/08 - 'Cynical and despicable' excuse for post office closures
EDITOR – Mr P Howard rightly complains of the huge sums (£511 per SECOND) which we pour into that unaccountable body known as the European Union, and mentions the closure of rural Post Offices in that context.
However, the EU is more directly involved than in merely draining off our money.
Any country-dweller knows that the monopoly of certain services which Post Offices used to enjoy, and which helped to keep them afloat, has been progressively removed by the government; it is thus both cynical and despicable of that government now to use reduced demand as an excuse for closures.
The process began over ten years ago when grocers and other retailers were allowed to buy postage stamps and sell them at a 5 per cent profit, and since then greater sources of income have likewise been diverted to non-postal outlets.
But the most significant cause of Royal Mail's reduced profitability is the opening up of certain major sources of revenue, eg the carriage of parcels, to competition.
Why was this done? Surprise, surprise - because the EU ordered it.
