At their Wednesday night meeting last week, Lion Peter Houldershaw ‘sponsored’ their newest member Andrew Newton.

Mr Newton stands around 6ft 5ins - making him the Lions’ tallest member, by some distance.

At the other end of the scale, Mr Houldershaw admits to being ‘five feet nothing.’

While there is an obvious difference in height, the pair are ‘united’ in their aim of helping the Lions raise funds for as many causes as possible - locally and internationally.

Mr Newton, a local businessman, is the younger brother of the Horncastle club’s Past President and Zone Chairman Steve Newton who was also a respected town and district councillor.

Mr Houldershaw is one of the Charter Members who helped form the Horncastle club four decades ago.

As the Horncastle Lions gear up to celebrate their 40th anniversary, the organisations’s International section is celebrating its centenary.

Lions are the largest service organisation in the world with 1.35 million members in 208 different countries.

Locally, the Lions help organise many events, including the town’s bonfire - and the Christmas lights and decorations.

They contribute to a host of worthwhile causes, including Horncastle’s recently re-opened youth club which is going from strength to strength.

Youth club officials say financial support from the Lions has been a major help in the opening weeks of the project.

Money from the Lions has helped purchase new equipment and has contributed towards re-furbishing the youth club headquarters off Jubilee Way.

*Youth club sessions are held every Monday and include a range of activities.
