Get stuck in with free family events celebrating Lincolnshire chalk streams

Activities include a community activity day at Belchford, and fun events for children including story-telling and putting on a play in one day.

On Tuesday April 4, 10am to 3pm children can put on a ‘Play in a Day’ at North Thoresby. In the morning, experienced theatre staff will work with children to take on the parts of different characters in a specially-written tale about life on a chalk streams.

In the afternoon, the children will perform their play in front of their families, being able to have fun while learning about life on the river bank.

Tuesday April 11, 10.00am -2.00pm sees a community activity day at Belchford playing field -an open event to help local residents improve the habitat of the River Waring for water voles, otters and other wildlife species which depend on healthy chalk stream habitats.

This event will be led by Will Bartle, monitoring officer, who said, “Wildlife such as water voles are under threat nationally and depend on healthy streams and rivers for their survival.

“This community day will involve tackling bankside vegetation that over-shades the stream and stream dipping to check for water quality.

“It’s a great way of helping wildlife and improving a public space for local residents.”

Wednesday April 12, 10.00 to 11.30am will see a story-telling morning for children at Horncastle.

Youngsters will be enthralled by Rhubarb Theatre’s tale of creatures living on a chalk stream. The story will be followed by a crafting session.

Ruth Craig, project officer said, “The Lincolnshire Chalk Streams Easter events are a great opportunity for people to enjoy and learn about Lincolnshire wildlife.

“As well as practical activities, there are free fun events for children, so whether you’re looking to entertain the children or just want to get your hands dirty, there’ll be something for everyone.”

The Lincolnshire Chalk Streams Project is a partnership project including, Lincolnshire County Council, Lincolnshire Wolds Countryside Service, Anglian Water, Environment Agency, Natural England, The Wild Trout Trust and Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust.

The aim of the project is to encourage good management of Lincolnshire’s chalk streams through, restoration, advice, education and monitoring of water quality.
