A NEW community orchard for Horncastle has seen its first trees take root.
While working with Horncastle Community Centre on a green energy project, the seeds were sown in the minds of Transition Town Horncastle members that this would be a good location to plant the first 20 hazel nut trees in what the group hope will become an orchard spread across the town.
Planting is being carried out with the help of Horncastle Lions and The Friends of Horncastle and District Healthcare and charity Relief in Need provided grants towards the cost of the trees.
Jennifer Lawrence, from Transition Town Horncastle, said: “The trees will not only be an attractive addition to the grounds, but will also help absorb CO2, in time provide a source of food in the form of nuts and also help benefit wildlife.
“The children attending the nursery in the centre will also be able to learn from this addition to their outdoor space.”
The next phase of the orchard will be to help residents round Gibson Green plant fruit trees on part of the Green.
