Pupils at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Horncastle have taken the challenge of cross country running in their stride.

Sixteen pupils competed in the recent Lincolnshire Schools’ championships at Caythorpe near Louth

Judging by the level of success, the school could have some budding Olympians in their ranks.

Three pupils have qualified for the English championships later this year - Megan Bennett, Sophie Roberts and Harry Baxter.

The trio will also join five of their schoolmates in the regional Anglian championships. Three other pupils are on stand-by for that event.

The challenge of competition has fired the ambition of several pupils - not least 18-year-old Sophie Roberts.

Essentially, she entered the county event to gain valuable practice for the gruelling London Marathon later this year.

The teenager will be running for charity and is hoping to raise funds for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease.

Sophie said: “My family has links with the charity and it would be great to raise money for such a worthy cause.

“I’ve run half-marathons before but never a full marathon so London is going to be a test.

“I prefer road running to cross country but I need to get in as much practice as I can.

“The county race was only four kilometres but it felt to be a lot further.”

Harry Baxter, 17, is also using the cross country races for training purposes. He’s a top 400m and 800m runner and attends an athletics club in Lincoln twice a week.

Megan Bennett, 12, the school’s third national finalist, is also hoping to impress ata higher level.

She said: ”I do like running but I also like swimming and it’s difficult to say which I prefer.”

More QEGS pupils progressed than any other school.
