Head wants action after pupil is injured

The headteacher of one of the area’s largest schools has called for urgent action to be taken after a pupil was injured in a road accident.

Geoff Cowley, the head of Gartree Community School in Tattershall, is pressing for a pedestrian crossing to be installed as quickly as possible.

He has already written to Lincolnshire County Council and is hoping they will back his request.

The pupil suffered a broken wrist and other cuts and bruises after apparently “bouncing off the bonnet” of a passing car.

The incident happened on the busy A153 which passes directly outside the school.

There is a 30mph restriction on the road and Mr Cowley stressed speed was not an issue in the accident.

However, he fears there is “every chance” of more serious accidents occurring.

Mr Cowley said: “It is a busy stretch of a long, straight road.

“At the start and finish of school, it is even busier.

“At the moment, there is no crossing but hopefully that will change.

“It is just sad that it has taken something like this to highlight the problem.”

Mr Cowley confirmed road safety experts regularly visited the school to talk to pupils.

He also confirmed road safety was part of the curriculum.

Mr Cowley added: “We are doing everything we can but it (road safety) is a worry.

“Parking is an issue and we acknowledge that.

“Ideally, the school should have a car park which could accommodate everyone, but that’s not possible.

“I have written to the county council and hopefully something positive will happen.“.

Graeme Butler, Highways Projects Manager for the County Council, said: “We’ve been in contact with the school and arranged for a Highways Officer and a member of the Road Safety Partnership to visit the headteacher and discuss what options are available to help improve safety.”
