Gartree School celebrates improvement in GCSE results

Staff and pupils at Gartree Community School are celebrating after outstanding GCSE results.

The pass rate for pupils gaining five A* to C grades - including Maths and English - went up by nine per cent to 45 per cent.

Excluding Maths and English, the pass rate was 72 per cent - an incease of six per cent on figures for 2011.

Headteacher Geoff Cowley believes the results are another positive sign that the school is making excellent progress.

Mr Cowley said: “These results, coupled with the recent Ofsted report that was very positive, are a clear indication that the school continues to make impressive progress.

“We are confident this imporvement will continue and are looking forward to even better results this summer.”

Deputy head Paul MacLeod, said: “We are very pleased with the results and many studets did far better than we were expecting.

“Students performend particularly well in English literature and geography.”

Individual highlights included Rachel Walls who recorded nine passes at grade A and four at grade B.

Daniel Brown obtained six A’s and four B’s while Nikitta Thornton passed 14 GCSE’s - including two A’s and 7 B’s.

The school was put into special measures 12 months following a damning Ofsted report.

After a difficult few months, Mr Cowley was brought in on a short-term basis and has helped turn the school around.

In a recent interview with the News, Mr Cowley was quick to praise the support he had received from staff and pupils.
