Gartree School is a step closer to becoming an academy as the start of a consultation with the David Ross Education Trust has been announced.

The Tattershall secondary school’s future has been at the centre of discussions between the local authority, the Department for Education and the Trust for some months.

This is welcome news for the school, which was placed in special measures by Ofsted just two years ago.

12 months after being put in special measures the school announced that it had been taken out and was rated as ‘requires improvement’.

The decision was made after Ofsted’s fourth monitoring visit and the school is now at the centre of a public consultation.

Wendy Marshall, DRET’s Chief Executive, said: “I am pleased that we have all been able to work together to offer the school not just a future, but an exciting opportunity to grow and progress.

“The Trust already has a number of smaller secondaries in our network, so we understand and have overcome some of the challenges that they face.

“What is important is that schools like Gartree remain at the very centre of their local communities.”

Headteacher Paul MacLeod said: “While I am obviously delighted with the progress that has been made, it is important to understand what our parents, staff, students and neighbours think to what becoming an academy means and what DRET has to offer our school.”

The consultation meetings will take place at the school have been set for April 1 at 2pm and 6pm.

Mr MacLeod added: “I would urge you to attend the meetings as the decisions that we make now will have a lasting impact on school and its community in the future.”

The consultation will run until May 1 and a questionnaire will be available to complete on the school’s website.
