Warning over threat of scam letters
AFTER an influx of scam letters in the area the News is warning residents not to fall for the possibility of a big payout.
Residents have received letters claiming that they are entitled to overseas lottery winnings or that they have been left with a large inheritance.
One gentleman from Horncastle received a letter claiming that he had won £600,000 in the ‘Euromillions Commonwealth of Nations Online Lottery’ based in Canada.
Another letter sent to a resident claimed she was entitled to a payout of $10.5 million from a bank in Hong Kong after an auditor claimed to have tracked her down from details of a deceased client.
These scams usually require the recipients to send large sums of money to a contact in order to pay for taxes, banking and legal fees with no intentions of sending any money back to them.
If you receive an email, letter, or phone call claiming you have won or are entitled to large sums of cash, report it to ActionFraud on 0300 123 2040.
