A LEADING figure in Lincolnshire’s Road Safety Partnership team has branded a Horncastle man as “mindless” after he admitted damaging a safety camera.

Daniel Paul Waller, of Old Bain Court, Conging Street, Horncastle, was fined £110 when he appeared before Skegness Magistrates last Friday.

Waller, aged 32, pleaded guilty to damaging the camera which is situated in Butts Lane, Tattershall, in May.

He was also ordered to pay £200 costs, compensation of £40 and a £15 victim surcharge.

Magistrates heard Waller damaged the magenta lens of the camera with a hammer while standing on the roof of his Vauxhall Vectra car.

John Siddle, communications manager for the Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership, admitted damage to cameras - which cost £35,000 - was an on-going problem.

He added: “In this particular case, the camera is situated outside Gartree School.

“Regardless of what people might think about cameras, the intention is to slow drivers down in a location where there is clear evidence of excessive speeding - and a very real danger to people.

“Damaging a camera directly outside a school is a clear and mindless act of vandalism - whatever the reason.”

Mr Siddle said the camera at Butts Lane was “not seriously” damaged and was operating again within 24 hours.

Waller also admitted driving his car on the same day in Butts Lane while over the permitted alcohol level.

Waller had 85 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. That is almost two-and-a-half times the permitted limit of 35 microgrammes.

Waller was fined £110 and disqualified from driving for 18 months. Magistrates offered the chance for Waller to reduce the ban by four months, provided he completes a rehabilitation course.

Waller had initially pleaded not guilty to both offences at an earlier hearing but changed his plea last Friday.
