Residents stunned after town drugs bust

Residents in Horncastle have spoken of their ‘shock and surprise’ after police mounted a successful drugs raid on a town centre flat.

Officers swooped on an address in Wharf Road last Wednesday in what appears to have been a careful, co-ordinated operation.

They discovered 140 cannabis plants growing in the attic of a four-storey building.

A 77-year-old man and a 64-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of producing drugs.

A 46-year-old man was arrested at a separate address in the town.

One resident, who asked not be named, told The News: “I know two of the people and I can’t believe it.

“I see them most days and I’d no ideas that this was happening.

“They seem perfectly normally people who are well-known and respected in the town.”

Ian Gregory, who lives close to the flat in question, said: “I was making a cup of coffee when I heard a lot of noise outside.

“I saw the police officers going into the flat and all kinds of things went through my mind.

“At first, I thought that someone had been attacked.

“I went downstairs to have a look and it was only then that some other people told me they (the police) had found the drugs.

“I’ve often seen people coming and going to the flat but I’ve never spoken to anyone who lives there.

“I’m still struggling to believe it. It is a shock because Horncastle is so quiet.

“There is a bit of noise around here at nights, especially at weekends, but mostly it’s young kids.”

Mr Gregory said there was a lot of police activity over the proceeding 24 hours.

Amy Chandler, who also lives locally, said she was not aware of any problems with drugs.

She added: “I am a parent and worry about drugs in society these days.

“I keep telling my kids about the dangers. If this has taken drugs off the streets then so much the better.”

The three people arrested were taken to Skegness Police Station and were bailed until April 19, pending further enquiries.
