Police issue a seasonal warning against the threat of oil theft

Police in Horncastle are warning householders, farmers and business owners to be on guard against the ever-present threat of oil thefts.

Rural areas are particularly vulnerable with rises in oil prices meaning full tanks are often worth thousands of pounds.

Police say there are a number of measures that can be taken to deter thieves, including the installation of outdoor lights and siting tanks way from the open view of roads and footpaths..

Alarms are also available which are activated when there is a suddden drop in the level of oil.

Sgt Alasdair Booth, of Horncastle Police, said: “Temperatures are plummeting at this time of year and we all need to turn up our heating.

“It is important for people to take every step possible to protect themselves from theft”.
