Community order for Co-op thefts
Matthew Freeman who appeared before Skegness Magistrates,
A HORNCASTLE man, who has served the equivalent of a 74 day prison sentence on remand awaiting sentence, has been given a community order at Skegness Magistrates’ Court.
Matthew Lloyd James Freeman, 29, of North Street, had admitted a range of offences, including six cases of stealing food from the town’s Co-op store.
He had been awaiting sentence after probation and psychiatric reports.
The court was told that Freeman twice stole food from the store on May 30, and committed further thefts from the same premises on June 1, July 6 and 9 - and again on September 15.
On several occasions, he handed the food back to staff after he was apprehended .
On other occasions - when he was seen on cctv - the food was subsequently found in his home by police officers.
At an earlier court hearing, Freeman was remanded in custody until sentence because he had continued to offend - and continually broke the conditions of his bail, which stated he should not go into the Co-op..
Jim Clare, prosecuting, told the magistrates that on September 28 last year, Freeman was seen urinating against someone’s back door .
On April 30 this year, he was arrested after being found drinking in the Market Place – an alcohol free zone – and assaulting a police officer, who was knocked back across the pavement and into the road by a blow.
In mitigation, Terry Boston said Freeman had been in custody for the equivalent of a 74 day prison sentence.
He said Freeman was willing to comply with the recommendations made in the Probation Service report.
The magistrates imposed a 12- month community order with supervision and a requirement for him to attend a 10 day alcohol awareness programme .
The order also requires Freeman not to enter the Co-op for the next 12 months.
He was warned that if he failed to comply with the order, his sentence would be increased and he might go to prison.
Freeman was also ordered to pay compensation to the Co-op for the food he had taken and to pay £75 in compensation to the police officer he assaulted.
