When it comes to pies, Woodhall Spa’s Russell and Sadie Hirst really have come up with a tasty recipe for success.

The husband and wife duo – who run a family owned butcher’s in Station Road – have won a silver medal in the prestigious British Pie awards.

It’s a stunning triumph – not least because the dedicated duo saw off competition from more than 800 other entrants.

Russell and Sadie secured the accolade for their steak and gravy pie.

Sadie said: “We’re delighted – and very proud

“We were a bit surprised because we’re just a small family butchers and we were up against specialist pie companies.

“To get a silver medal is amazing.

“We won bronze last year for our pasty and now we’ve got silver for our steak and gravy pie.

“Hopefully, next year it will be gold!”

The pies are handmade by butcher Russell and baker Sadie.

Sadie, though, is not giving too much away about the secret behind their success - especially when it comes to all important seasoning.

She explained: ”We use the finest products – like locally sourced meat.

“As for the seasoning, that will have top stay a secret. If I told you, I’d have to kill you!”

Not surprisingly, the pies are a big hit with regulars and visitors to Woodhall Spa.

Sadie suggests the best way to enjoy them is with minted peas or fresh asparagus, alongside local new potatoes.

And it’s not just steak and gravy pies that mean the duo are a crust above the rest.

The couple’s pork and red onion marmalade pies are earning rave reports.

Sadie makes the marmalade filling herself. Again, the recipe is a closely guarded secret.

The couple have enjoyed a iong list of success in various county and national competitions and are already hard at work developing a new product - steak and Bateman’s pie.

It appears their award-winning Lincolnshire sausages have won the approval of a ‘famous fan’.

Home Secretary Theresa May bought a couple of pounds of sausages when she called into the butcher’s shop on a recent campaign visit to Woodhall Spa.

According to reports, she’s told friends the sausages are the best she’s ever tasted.
