Pub ready to go after five months hard work

AFTER four months of refurbishment the Durham Ox in Thimbleby is readying itself for it’s opening night on Wednesday September 26.

Owners Angie and Vinnie Balderson
have worked tirelessly on the pub for the
last four months, giving it a complete makeover.

Angie has worked in the pub industry for the last 30 years, but said that this was the first pub she has actually owned - having leased previous properties she has worked in.

“We’ve spent £90,000 on refurbishing the place,” she said. “We’ve got new floors, new carpets, new curtains, everything.

“It’s taken seven skips to clear out all the rubbish that used to be in here.”

Angie added that this will be the first pub she was worked on, which will have its focus mainly on food.

“I’ve had pubs in the past that have had darts and snooker and the like, but this is the first one which will be centred on food.

“We won’t be a Gastro Pub, but we’ll offer good, locally sourced English fayre.

“We’ll have specials, and we’ll be bringing in fresh fish from the docks on Fridays.”

Angie and Vinnie were commuting
from Louth before moving into the pub in August.

Angie said: “We’ve been at it nearly five months now, we can’t wait to get on with it.”

The Ox will also be creating 17 new jobs when it opens next week.

“Four of our staff will be full time, two of them chefs who are both very experienced,” Angie said.

“We’ll also have experienced bar staff who will be running the team.

“As well as that we have 10 18-year-olds from the village starting with us.

“We want to take on as many as we can to get them on the working ladder.”

Landlord Vinnie said: “I got into the pub industry through Angie who is from that background.

“I wanted a change really. It’s all about the pub now.”

He also stressed that the pub will want to use as much produce as possible from the local area. From crisps, to beer, to the food.

“It’s us helping everyone else out.

“We do think that this will be a destination pub, and we’re looking forward to meeting the locals.”

Angie said: “It was a nice feeling being able to put the ‘opening soon’ sign up.

“There’s been a lot of work behind the scenes, it hasn’t all been easy but we’re hoping it will be worth it.”
