New chimney sweep system could reduce danger of fires
WITH summer drawing to a close, Chimney Fire Safety Week, September 21–27, provides a timely reminder to make sure that your chimney is ready for the winter months ahead.
A new innovation from Rodtech - the Power Sweep - is now available in Lincolnshire and Julian Miles of Stacks Chimney Sweep, Hagworthingham, believes he is the first sweep in the country to use it.
The system works like a garden strimmer, the brush head consists of four to eight plastic strands that is pushed up a chimney using rods.
The bottom rod is attached to a drill, spinning the head at high speed, stripping away the soot and tar from the flue.
Sweeping a chimney the conventional way using the ‘old’ style brushes and then sweeping with the Power Sweep can remove as much soot again as the old system.
It has been tested and approved by the National Association of Chimney Sweeps (NACS) for use in all kinds of chimneys, including flexible metal liners.
Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue attended 123 chimney fires in the last year, and this new system could reduce this number.
NACS recommends that chimneys are swept once a year if they are smokeless fuel, oil and gas, or every three months for coal and wood.
Insurance companies need proof of sweeping if you have a chimney fire.
