End finally in sight to West Street works

Contractors have promised to complete work at a major Horncastle road junction this Friday, ending weeks of misery for drivers and residents.

The National Grid has replaced a 230m gas pipe in West Street.

The project has involved major work at the junction of West Street and Lincoln Road - leading to long delays.

Work has taken a week longer to complete than expected with the National Grid blaming “severe snow, sub-zero temperatures and excavation issues.”

John Seigel, who lives on West Street, has hit out at the timing and organisation of the work.

He said: “I am aware many people have been seriously inconvenienced by the roadworks. The residents of West Street are foremost in that group,”

Mr Seigel praised nearby Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School for their efforts to reduce delays but said more thought could have gone into the whole project.

He added: “To say that work will be completed as quickly as possible is an insult to the intelligence of even us West Street muggins who continue to believe and act on the drivel put out by the authorities.”

Peter Firth, of Lincoln Road, proposed holding a party to celebrate the end of the works.

He added: “It has been a complete nightmare and the reasons behind the latest delays are crazy.

“I could count the number of days when work has actually gone on for eight hours on the fingers of one hand.

“We’ve had noise, smell, and long lines of standing traffic outside our home.

“It is worse at weekends and the end of the school day.”

Sarah Thomas, of Spilsby, said she was ‘sick to death’ of the delays and added: “It’s been one thing after another in Horncastle.

“For weeks, we had the delays on Skegness Road and Boston Road. I wonder what’s next.”

A National Grid spokesman apologised for any inconvenience.
