IT takes a brave person to set up a business during a recession, but Jo Slesser, owner of Janili Jo’s craft studio at Bainland Country Park, has done just that.

Janili Jo’s is celebrating its first birthday on Friday, August 31, and Jo is delighted with how the first full year has gone.

Originally based in Woodhall Spa town centre, Jo made the decision to move to the country park and has seen the business go from strength to strength.

Jo said: “We’ve made it through our first year and I’m really pleased.

“We moved to Bainland because the shop in the town centre wasn’t sustainable due to the higher rent cost.

“I came here and the owners were really interested in what we had to offer.”

“We’ve also had a really positive response from visitors too.

“They really enjoy the atmosphere here at the country park.”

Jo originally started with pottery and a craft called DecoPatch, which involves decorating models with brightly coloured paper and varnish, and has moved on to also offer mosaics and felt craft.

“I’ve always had a love of craft work.

“I used to work in pharmaceuticals, but stopped that when I decided to have children.

“I used to run felting workshops around my kids, but then I decided I didn’t want to be in the house all the time so set this up.”

Janili Jo’s has also used an opportunity for other local crafters to showcase their wares.

“We have a glass painter and a jeweller that display their crafts,” said Jo.

“It’s a chance for them to show what they have to offer as well.”

Jo also revealed that her children were the inspiration behind the unusual name of the studio.

“Janili comes from my three children’s names mixed together.

“There’s Jack, Niamh and Liam.

“My eldest suggested putting Jo on the end, and it stuck.”

Janili Jo’s is hosting a birthday party on Friday to celebrate the special day, with a birthday cake, face painting and special offers for visitors.
