Business success for Gartree alumni

Gartree School

AS exam results are released and pupils all over The Wolds are thinking about their futures, two ex-Gartree pupils are sending an encouraging message to those thinking about their next steps.

Nick Maltby and Robert Grant, both 47, left Gartree in the early 1980s and have since gone on to work in successful businesses.

Nick is the Managing Director at MTAG Composites, a fabrication company based in Boston, and Robert runs a transport company in Brisbane, Australia - RT Logistics.

MTAG have just completed a £1.6 million contract for Alstom Ferroviaria SpA’s four new Pendolino Virgin Trains.

Robert’s company serves the area surrounding Brisbane, including the Gold Coast and has strong words of advice for aspiring students.

“A lot of your success is about having the guts to go for it,” he said.

“There’s no such thing as you can’t do this or you can’t do that.

“If you want to do something you should go for it.”

Nick explained that he started with smaller tasks and then worked his way up to where he is now.

He said: “Luckily, before I received my qualifications at Gartree, I had a job offer for an apprenticeship at Fibercast.

“I started with the mucky jobs, and went up.

“I finished my qualifications and worked my way up to technical manager and helped run the company.

“I left on amicable terms after 27 years. As soon as I left, I received a call about manufacturing a toilet module and internal composite panels for the rail industry.

MTAG now employs 33 staff, a number of which attended Gartree, and are now fulfilling orders for a number of blue chip companies.

Nick added: “In four and half years we have doubled in size every year.

“It’s all about hard work, ambition and having a great team of employees around you.”
