A glass of whisky and ginger beer is Tetford resident Bessie’s secret to a long and happy life after she recently celebrated her 105th birthday.

Bessie Glendinning has lived in the Wolds village with her only son Brian and daughter-in-law Peggy for the last 30 years.

And Brian admits he would happily follow Bessie’s ‘recipe’ for a long life.

Brian said: “My mum has a glass of whisky with some ginger beer every night before she goes to bed.

“ So I feel like this might be her secret to reaching the age of 105.

“It is definitely a tradition I would happily follow a little later on in my own life.”

Bessie celebrated her special birthday on February 13 with the help The Grove Care Home in West Ashby who laid on a special buffet tea.

She was born in Durham and came to Tetford to live with her son after her husband died.

And, just like Brian, she has come to love the Lincolnshire Wolds.

Brian added: “I joined the Royal Air Force to see the world and spent most of my working life living out of a number of RAF stations all across Lincolnshire.

“I thought the area where I had lots of memories from throughout my life would be a good place to retire to.

“So, we decided to buy a property here and my mum came to live with us 30 years ago.

“We love the Wolds - and so does mum.”

Bessie did spend several months at The Grove when she came out of hospital following treatment.

As a result, staff members thought she would enjoy a party at the care home to meet some old friends again. Family members also enjoyed the occasion.

Bessie was joined by her two great-grandchildren, twins Grace and Freya, who are four-years-old.

As well as a big cake (pictured above), Bessie also received a large array of floral bouquets.
