Friday, 5pm - Eighty invited guests gathered at the Sir Joseph Banks Centre in Bridge Street, Horncastle, to watch the High Sheriff of Lincolnshire JAC Godfrey CBE formally open the Sir Joseph Banks Tribute Garden.
The garden supported by the Big Lottery Fund, Greenshoots and East Lindsey District Council, displays a large selection of newly-planted species associated with Sir Joseph the noted 18th century botanist and long serving President of the Royal Society.
The project was coordinated by the vice-chairman Jean Burton, from Fulletby, with the hard landscape design by Vee Read and the planting scheme by Gwen Grantham.
Much of the work was carried out by trainees from the Linkage Community Trust.
Introducing the High Sheriff and other speakers, the society chairman Dr Cheryle Berry thanked all those involved and stressed that this was a community garden which she hoped the public would visit and enjoy.
The High Sherriff spoke of Horncastle's rich heritage and the contribution that Sir Joseph Banks had made both locally, nationally and internationally.
Sir Joseph Banks also served Lincolnshire as High Sherriff.
Therefore. it was particularly appropriate that the current incumbent was able to honour the society in this way.
