A large crowd gathered for the first of what was set to be weekly auctions at Horncastle Cattle Market in 1997.

Auctioneer Jack Hart of Rutland Auctions, the firm organising the sales, kept everyone on their toes and the top item was a Davenport desk, which went for £190. The sale included everything from meat and veg to furniture. Rutland Auctions used to run the sales in The Ship car park, until Mr Hart announced the Cattle Market was ideal because it was under cover and had plenty of car parking.

He said : “Lots of people have said how nice it is that the market isbeing used again.”
