A CELEBRATORY launch of a book documenting the life of Sir Joseph Banks was held in Horncastle recently.

Founder member and past chairman of the Sir Joseph Banks Society, Jean Burton, is the author of Sir Joseph Banks Rooted in Lincolnshire.

Around 70 guests gathered at the Sir Joseph Banks Centre in Bridge Street, including the Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire, Tony Worth and the High Sheriff of Lincolnshire, John Burke.

Mr Burke’s wife, Rosie, gave a speech to launch the book

Her lively address demonstrated her considerable knowledge of the Banks’ connection with Lincolnshire and the important role Sir Joseph played in the history of Great Britain and Australasia.

Welcoming the guests, the Society’s chairman, Dr Cheryle Berry, said it was an important step for the Society to enter the world of publishing after just five years.

She added that the Society is the only group in the country devoted to the promotion of the memory of Sir Joseph and, as the visitors’ book proves, it is attracting visitors from around the world.

Dr Berry revealed that in conjunction with the Collection in Lincoln, the Society is planning a major exhibition on Banks, to be displayed in Lincoln before touring the UK.

Sir Joseph Banks Rooted in Lincolnshire was printed by Cupits of Horncastle and funded by the Lincoln Record Society and the Community Champions Fund managed by the Lincolnshire Community Foundation.

The illustrated book consists of a series of Banks related trails throughout Lincs, interspersed with a mass of information and history about the truly great explorer, botanist and long serving President of the Royal Society.

The book is on sale at the Sir Joseph Banks Centre.
