Civic Society talk on Horncastle’s listed buildings

The latest Horncastle Civic Society meeting took place last week with a speaker from the Heritage Trust of Lincolnshire.

Dr. Mathew Godfrey described the national Heritage at Risk Programme.

The listing of buildings of special interest started after the end of the Second World War with new listings added year upon year.

Today there are over 9,000 buildings in Lincolnshire.

When the system was set up there was no provision for subsequent re-checking of the condition of buildings or whether they still existed.

Using Volunteer Heritage Stewards, over 75% of Lincolnshire’s structures have been recorded and surveyed.

David Lawrence and Bob Wayne were then introduced by Civic Society Chair Mary Silverton.

The two gave an illustrated talk on the condition of both Horncastle’s 110 listed buildings and Conservation area.
