Trophy winers at the Coningsby and District Flower, Produce and Craft Show 2014

The 2014 Coningsby and District Flower, Produce and Craft Show was held in the Coningsby Hall last Saturday, 13th September.

There were four charity stalls set up outside the hall, which were all well supported throughout the afternoon. The winners of the Bill Edgar Memorial Rose Bowl for the most attractive tall were the members of Coningsby and Tattershall Lions. There were three scarecrows, all with a Circus theme. The winning scarecrow was the Coningsby & Tattershall W.I.’s traditional straw figure of a circus clown, second was a magnificent ringmaster with a knitted head from the Lions and the British Legions’ female juggler was placed third. All three scarecrows were bright and colourful exhibits in the Hall lounge area.

There were magnificent exhibits all round the Hall in the various sections. Another of Jack Braby’s magnificent pumpkins won class 17, largest pumpkin, and the Sivill Trophy for the Best Vegetable in Show. The Maurice Pinion Trophy for the Best Exhibit in the Flower section was again won by William Pickwell with a vase of Cactus Dahlias. The Millenium Trophy for the exhibitor scoring the most points in the show was won by Julie Banks with a total of 42 points spread over more than 30 entries in the different classes. A large number of entries in the Art Competition made another colourful sight in the lounge. Although it didn’t figure amongst the top three winning pictures, a large triptych of paintings showing a flight of geese, a cornfield with a patch of poppies, a low-flying Typhoon fighter aircraft and a cloudy sky full of golds, whites and blues was considered to be the exhibit which most epitomised the “Spirit of the Legion”, and as a result artist Phil Janes won the Trophy presented by the local Royal British Legion. Mr Janes later donated the picture to the Show committee to sell to raise funds. Bids can be passed to Committee members, if unsold the painting will be auctioned at next year’s Show. Val Farnham won the Art Competition with a well-executed painting of boats and buildings lining the sides of an industrial canal, using colour and perspective to great effect.

The Trophies were all presented by Mrs Lorna Curtis, BEM, and after a photo-call with the winners, John Pinion again conducted the auction of produce which had been donated by exhibitors, to raise funds to help run next year’s Show. Joan Roseveare and Mary Walker then rounded off the afternoon by drawing the Grand Raffle, with £100, £50 and £25 cash prizes and lots of other prizes donated by local businesses and friends of the Show.
