The 20th Anniversary of Castleby Ladies was celebrated with a special Luncheon held at The Abbey Lodge in Woodhall Spa on Tuesday September 9.

Castleby Ladies was formed in 1994 by Mary Elliot, widow of the late W Bro Ray Elliot, who was a member of both Shakespeare Lodge in Spilsby and Olive Union Lodge in Horncastle. The name was derived from taking part of Horncastle and Spilsby and merging them, and Castleby Ladies was born. Mary’s mission from the outset was to give the wives and partners of Freemasons of these two lodges the chance to get to know one another better. It was an immediate success and is still as popular as ever today.

Hilary Carter who has been Chair Lady for the past eleven years was delighted to welcome over forty ladies to the lunch, including one new member – Marion Underwood. Special thanks were given to the Founder members and especially Mary Elliot who was there to share the special anniversary. Hilary thanked her committee, made up of Sue Murfin, Lisa Hammond and Sadie Hirst for their help and support throughout the year. Hilary said that over the years through the generosity of the ladies that they had donated any surplus funds to many local charities, including Wish Upon a Star, Lives First Responders, Horncastle Cubs, Lincs Ark and many more.

The ladies were all given a present of a beautifully handcrafted cake to take home as special anniversary gift. Hilary thanked Sadie Hirst for all of her hard work making and decorating them.

The Abbey Lodge served a delicious lunch offering a choice of Salmon with Hollandaise Sauce or a Vegetarian option of Spinach and Ricotta Cannelloni, followed by Trifle or Ice Cream and Tea or Coffee.

A superb raffle followed with many of the prizes having been generously donated by the ladies.

Hilary then welcomed Peter Dalby as Guest speaker, who gave an excellent presentation on his life at sea. Peter very kindly donated his speaker’s fee to Bucknall church.

Lisa Hammond gave the vote of thanks to Peter on everyone’s behalf and said how much his talk had been enjoyed and what an interesting insight he had given into his career in the Merchant Navy.

This special 20th Anniversary Lunch was rounded off perfectly with Lisa saying some heartfelt words of thanks to Hilary for all of her hard work and dedication to Castleby Ladies over the past decade. Hilary was then presented with a bouquet of flowers by her daughter Sadie.
