EDITOR - When is a poll not a poll? - When it's an unnecessary travesty.
With regard to the future of the Horncastle town hall it is my opinion that the meeting that took place on Friday June 27 has done nothing to further Horncastle's attempts to avail itself of a town hall building worthy of the name.
I also believe
that the letters written by Horncastle's Mayor, Coun Christopher Wybrow, and by ELDC councillor for Horncastle, Steve Newton, published in your newspaper last week, have summed up the various sides of the 'refurbish or re-build' argument in a clear and concise manner.
In doing so they have made us aware that any decision regarding a future town hall must take into account not just the views of those who may wish to retain the existing building at any cost (dare I say the middle aged and elderly) but also the younger and future generations who will continue to use the building long after the greybeards among us have departed to other venues of discussion.
In view of the above I ask myself 'What is the purpose of the poll to be held this week – based as it is on only one side of the argument?' The answer surely has to be 'None'.
I respectfully suggest therefore that the poll be either boycotted or, preferably, abandoned thereby saving the town a great deal of unnecessary hassle and expenditure.
