DID you serve in Horncastle's Home Guard? Do you remember any of the anti-tank defences put up in the town in case of invasion?
If you do Dave Birchall, of Horncastle Civic Society, wants to hear from you.

He said many towns, including Horncastle, were designated as 'anti-tank islands,' to be manned by Home Guard Companies with orders to defend these areas at all costs.

The defences consisted of loop holed walls, pill boxes, weapons pits, anti-tank walls and road blocks set up at the entrances to the town.

Home Guard Companies consisted of local men who were given these extra duties on top of their normal, heavy wartime workload.

In many of the larger towns, traces of these defences still exist, even though they were mostly dismantled by 1942 when the threat of invasion receded. Are there any traces left of these defences in Horncastle? Call Dave on 01507 522144.
