IF YOU have been in Horncastle Market Place on a Wednesday evening around 6.30pm you may have noticed a group of people on vintage scooters, reminiscent of the sixties scene.
The Horncastle-based Generations Scooter Club is riding the wave of the scooter's greatest ever comeback since the days of the Mods and Rockers.

This cool club was set up by Andy Robinson, 54, of Boston Road, Horncastle, and his friend Frank Stones, in 2004.

Since then, it has grown to have at least 40 members, men and women, with an age range from 16 to 60.

"The scooter scene has come back in a big way. I even know members who have sold their motorcycles in order to buy a scooter," said Mr Robinson, who runs a television shop in Horncastle.

"I got my first scooter at the beginning of the seventies and just missed out on the proper Mod culture of the sixties. I used to wear the Ben Sherman shirt and the Levi sta-press jeans and go on a ride to Skegness."

Now, these scooter enthusiasts are more likely to wear bomber jackets and polo shirts.

The weekly Wednesday rides cover different locations such as Sutton on Sea, Branston, Mablethorpe and North Somercotes.

There is also Scooters In The Square on the second Sunday of each month which invites scooterists from other clubs across the area for a ride from Horncastle Market Place.

Some club members recently joined thousands of scooter enthusiasts from around the world at the Lambretta Club of Great Britain in Lincoln.

A club trip to Las Vegas was enjoyed by members last year.

When asked why he liked scooters so much, Mr Robinson said: "They are the most unreliable things ever but it is the social side of it which is so good – it is an escape."
