LINCOLNSHIRE County Council is recommending motorists travelling between Horncastle and Tumby take a 23-mile detour during road works on the A153.
The diversion represents a three-and-a-half fold increase in the length of the journey, from 6.67 miles to 23.57 miles.
Work is due to begin on a two-mile stretch of the A153 from its junction with the A155 on Wednesday, September 16.
Two-way temporary traffic lights will be in use for the first three weeks, but the road will then close for the next 12 days between 7am and 7pm (though opening on weekends).
The county council is, thus, recommending motorists travel along the A155 to Partney and then along the A16 to Horncastle, or vica versa, ensuring the use of "like for like" roads.
The reconstruction and resurfacing work is scheduled to be completed by October 22, and should ensure the road remains safe for motorists for the next 20 years.
