Thorpe Camp turns back clock

THORPE Camp Visitor Centre will throw open its doors this weekend to stage the annual 1940’s “We’ll Meet Again” event.

There will be a series of displays and demonstrations depicting life under canvas by British, American and Allied Forces.

A collection of Luftwaffe uniforms and equipment will also be on show while the ATS transport section will remove the engine from a war time Jeep, service and re-fit it.

A 1940’s-style front room will also be built, complete with furniture.

Visitors will be able to see various Jeeps, trucks and motor bikes, along with items from the Military Vehicle Trust. There will also be civilian vintage vehicles on show and more than 250 re-enactors in military and civilian attire will attend.

Almost 30 trade stalls, selling everything from the 40’s era - including military clothing and civilian clothing, kitchenware, books, maps and shoes - will be on site. Various RAF charities will be on duty.

The on-site museum will be open all weekend, depicting RAF and civilian life in Lincolnshire during the war years.

The NAAFI will be serving home made cakes and buns and teas and coffee while organisers have also provided a beer tent and food stall.

Marlaina Rube, a renowned 40’s singer, will perform throughout the weekend while the “Blitz Dancers” will be on hand to teach a few war-time steps and routines. There will also be a speech from Winston Churchill!

Other entertainment on both days in the ration store will be professional 40’s Revue Show from Heydays, “Dodging The Doodlebugs.” There will be two shows on Saturday.

The programme also features a talk on the Dambusters and “Guy Gibson The Man” along with a one act play “Musicality” - taken from 40’s war letters.

On Saturday night, there will be a 40’s dance in Coningsby Village Hall with “Moggies Music Memories.” People are requested to bring their own drinks and snacks and are asked to “dress to impress.”

Sunday’s programme will feature a service and wreath laying ceremony at 10.30.

*Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre is located at Tattershall Thorpe, off the Woodhall Spa to Coningsby road. It is open from 10am-5.30pm over the weekend.

Details of the 40’s event are available from www.1940weekend.co.uk.
