AS many local children start their first days of school, we take a look back to September 2001 - when young News reporter Tom Carlisle started secondary school.

l TOWN Traders ‘Marooned’. Similarly to roadworks currently taking place this month, many of Horncastle’s stores were badly affected by changes to the Market Place.

Perkins Newsagents felt 
particularly affected as regular customers often went elsewhere to avoid the hassle and hazard of 
negotiating an unfinished footpath.

Market traders were also 
moved into St. Lawrence Street car park for the duration of the work.

There was also a concern that 
if traders chose not to take up 
their stalls on the temporary 
site that they would lose their permanent pitches on the Market Place.

l HORNCASTLE Playing Fields Management Committee was set to receive a £25,000 boost from the district council on condition it was successful in its bid for lottery funding.

l IT was announced that Horncastle County Primary School was to be allocated a new classroom to keep class sizes down.

l PLANS to build a block of flats on the former Spraycare site in Woodhall Spa provoked strong objections from the parish council.

Councillors discussed the planning application by Brown Butlin Group Ltd for 35 flats off Albany Road.

l HORNCASTLE Lions gave up their time to tackle jobs, including completely relaying the floor. at the Scout’s headquarters on Coronation Walk.

l A TEAM from St. Mary’s Church, Horncastle, set off on a 43–mile bike ride around 24 
village churches to raise 
money for their own and the 
Lincolnshire Old Churches Trust.
