Happy faces at the Harvest Thanksgiving service at the Blue Bell Inn, Belchford

THIS week’s nostalgia takes us back to 1971, when the News was published on a Thursday at a cost of 2p.

l ’RENTS could go up with a bump’. Horncastle Urban District Council was told it was entitled to raise their house rents by 50p per week, every year, if this is necessary to bring them to an economic level.

It was agreed that the new rent structure should be introduced by April 1972.

l HORNCASTLE UDC also carried out big improvements to a property on Mareham Road, Horncastle.

The house was re-roofed and the interior modernised.

But Councillors were told the rent will have to go up from £2.08 to £3.79.

l A PARTY of 50 Horncastle Darby and Joan members and helpers went by coach to visit the Day Centre in Lincoln.

They watched the Old Tyme Dancing Club and were invited to join in the dancing.

l HORNCASTLE Villages’ Collection for the British Red Cross raised nearly £200 - an increase over £43 during the year.

l A RACE card for the Skegness to Horncastle walk was printed, including a number of familiar names.

Three-time winner Ray
Ibbotson was due to take part in
a bid for a fourth-consecutive win (which he managed to achieve).

83-year-old Mrs Waddingham was due to take part, as was Bill Balderson, who was the oldest competitor to complete the course in 1970.

l THE Aircraft Servicing Flight of RAF Coningsby serviced their 600th Phantom since the station became fully operational in January 1969.

l ST. HELEN’S Church, Mareham-Le-Fen, raised nearly £50 following a successful harvest festival.

l CONINGSBY Parish Council were making every effort to improve and extend street lighting throughout the village.

The council was also to offer a price for part of the old railway embankment - the section seen from the main Horncastle approach road.

l AN ALL-ROUND increase in prices from £2 to £5 per head was the feature of a local sheep fair.

l HORNCASTLE Cricket Club concluded a very successful season with a 10 wicket victory over Fishtoft.

Fishtoft were bowled out for 68 runs, and Ben White and Dick Williamson combined for Horncastle to ease their way to a winning score of 72 for no loss.
