Hospice calls on help from community

A hospice is appealing for your support to raise awareness of its services and boost vital funds.

In an interview with the Horncastle News St Barnabas Hospice’s new community fundraiser Caroline Swindin admitted there are still many people not aware of all the services on offer – and she is determined to change that.

Caroline is keen to hold talks for as many different groups as possible – anything from Young Farmers to the Women’s Institute can get involved.

“It’s about getting the word out there – plus you never know when someone you know might need help,” said Caroline.

The hospice – which is the Horncastle News’ well-deserving Charity of the Year – offers day therapy, at home support and welfare services, as well as its in patient unit in Lincoln.

Caroline said: “If anyone would like to organise a fundraiser themselves then that would be even better.

“We’re a local hospice offering services throughout Lincolnshire and we rely heavily on funding from events to deliver care throughout the county.

“I feel very strongly and passionately about the work and services we deliver, having seen the work and how it benefits and supports people with life limiting illnesses, it isn’t just cancer.

“And it isn’t just for elderly people, we’ve actually seen a lot more young people using the day therapy service recently.”

Day therapy includes things such as arts and crafts, holistic treatments, use of gardens.

Caroline said: “Many people think it’s just about going into the hospice to die but it’s about caring for their life, making things as comfortable as possible and providing recreational activities.”

Caroline stressed her free talks would not be ‘clinical’ but would focus on the history of the hospice, its services and general facts and figures.

She is happy to do talks in Market Rasen, Horncastle, Louth, Mablethorpe, Sutton on Sea and coastal areas.

Talks can be tailored to suit the time available.
