Flooding issues are discussed
Problems with flooding were discussed at a recent meeting of the Horncastle Planning and Development Committee.
East Lindsey District Council’s Senior Planning Officer, Mr Panton, attended the meeting to provide members with an update on planning matters.
Members discussed several measures that could be incorporated into planning stages to make properties more flood resistant, or help manage a flood better.
These included raising floor levels, allowing flood water to flow through areas by having car ports instead of garages, ensuring buildings on plots were kept to areas of higher land and raising electrical points within a building.
New developments will have to have in place a sustainable drainage system to hold water on a site rather than allowing it to run off onto other areas. This would see the installation of swales, ponds and permeable paths.
From 2013, Lincolnshire County Council will be insisting all new large housing schemes have sustainable drainage systems.
Rainwater harvesting was another way of better managing heavy rainfalls.
