ELDC says yes to parking increase
East Lindsey District Council has given the go-ahead for controversial increases in car parking charges.
The new regulations will come into force in all ELDC-owned car parks in Horncastle, Woodhall Spa and Coningsby.
Charges will also be introduced for the first time at a number of car parks which were previously free of charge, including The Wong in Horncastle.
Vehicle owners will also have to pay to park on Sundays.
Councillors agreed to the changes yesterday (Wednesday) at a full meeting of the council.
They said the charges would create a fairer system in the district and pointed out the first hour in the majority of fcar parks would still be free.
They were also told that if charges were not increased, it would lead to a £400,000 budget short-fall. As a result, front-line services would then be under threat.
In an emotional and at times stormy meeting, there were various objections to the ELDC proposals.
Horncastle councillor Fiona Martin criticised the move to introduce charges on the Wong, claiming it would lead to vehicle owners parking in surrounding streets or at Stanhope Hall.
Coningsby councillor Ray Curtis proposed deferring a decision on the increases but his amendment did not gain enough support.
Coningsby businessman Andrew Goldsborough presented councillors with a petition signed by more than 2,000 people calling for the increase to be scrapped.
He claimed the increases would have a negative impact on local communities which were already struggling in the recession.
