Community award for 98–year–old stalwart Mary
Mary Abbotts knows exactly how she’ll spend her 98th birthday.
She’ll be stacking chairs and generally tidying up in Belchford Village Hall.
Mrs Abbotts has been caretaker at the village hall since it opened in 1974.
Even though she’s approaching her very own centenary, she has no intention of ‘hanging up’ her mop and bucket just yet.
She said: “It’s what keeps me going. I live just across the road so I often just pop in.
“The hall is well-used so there’s always something needs doing.
“I’m proud to be a part of it.”
Mrs Abbotts’ devotion to duty has been recognised by Community Lincs.
They have just presented her with the John Barker Trophy for outstanding voluntary service to a community.
Not surprisingly, Mrs Abbotts - who is 98 in December - is the oldest ever winner.
A spokesman for the village hall committee said: “We couldn’t manage without her.”
