NORTH Lincolnshire Council is responsible for solving Brigg's river litter problem and needs to invest in a boat to do clearance work.
That appears to be the message from Keith Stothard of the Environment Agency following concerns expressed by the town council year that nobody is taking responsibility for keeping the river litter free.

He also stressed that neither the unitary a
uthority nor the agency dropped the litter. That was the general public who themselves need to tidy up their act.
Brigg Town Council has urged greater action from all quarters with a volunteer river care group recently under discussion.

But it is the local authority rather than the agency that can take action, although they first need to get a boat and tools to do the job.
"In Grimsby, North East Lincolnshire has a small rowing boat to clear up and North Lincolnshire need to follow that example," said Mr Stothard
"We have a responsibility for any bulky or large items but not general litter."
River locations near fast food outlets, even within two miles, were always bad, he said.
Overlooking the stretch of river by the County Bridge Mr Stothard said the large bush-like weeds would be removed in the Autumn by the agency, whose responsibility they are.
"They are only this summer's growth and as usual we shall cut them back," he declared.

Mr Stothard is Team Leader for the Environment Agency in North Lincolnshire.
